Just a Little Catching Up with Thank You and an Upcoming Giveaway!

So excited today because my kitchen update is being featured over at Savvy Southern Style as the most viewed link from last week's party! The Easiest Cookie Bar Recipe Ever!!

 

This recipe is so simple that it only takes 2 ingredients to make! All you need is an 18 oz. package of pre-made refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough like Toll House brand, and some seedless raspberry preserves. Reserving 1/2 cup of the cookie dough, spread the remainder of it on the bottom of a 9 X 9 inch baking dish. Spread 1/2 a cup of the preserves over the top and then drop the remaining cooking dough in clumps across the top. Pop the dish into an oven pre-heated to 350 degrees and bake for 25 minutes. Let cool and then cut into 16 square bars.

 

 

This recipe was so easy that these cookies were actually made by my 10 year old daughter Gracie! You can also use either blackberry or strawberry preserves for a yummy variation.

"Happy Halloween" Sign Made with Beadboard

I really wanted to make a sign for Halloween to put on my front porch, so as I was googling around I found this sign on the HGTV website.

I thought it was cute and I happened to have a good size piece of beadboard in my garage left over from our beadboard back splash project. You know how I love to use things I already have lying around in the garage and basement, so for me this was the perfect storm! To see the beadboard back splash project click here.

 

 

First I sprayed the beadboard black and then after it was dry I distressed it both by hand and with an electric sander.

 

 

The tutorial on the HGTV website says to use card stock paper to create the print and then to distress it with Distress Ink. I've never heard of distress ink but evidently it is meant to give a realistic aged look to paper. Well I didn't have any card stock but I did have my shelf liner that I used to make my faux pumpkin. To distress, or make the shelf liner look aged, I used regular old craft paint in a brown color. This was the only thing I had that would actually adhere to the glossy finish of the shelf liner. All I did was simply wipe it on with paper towel in an uneven fashion. Finally instead of the "boo" on the original sign, I used a Halloween banner by Martha Stewart which I purchased at Home Goods for $1.50, and duct taped the black ribbon to the back of the beadboard. 

 

 

And that was it! I put two eye hooks on either side and thread through some orange ribbon, secured it with a slip knot and it was ready to be hung.

 

Halloween is less than two weeks away...are you ready for the little witches and goblins in your neighborhood on All Hallows Eve?

Note: I put this outside on a damp day and the letters begun to curl, so I brought it back inside and applied a coat of Mod Podge and let it dry completely before rehanging it.

Another Peek at 1961 thru the Pages of Better Homes and Gardens Magazine

A few months back I published a post highlighting some old Better Homes and Gardens magazines I collected from the year 1961! This post was a lot fun to create and it received so many comments from you tail end baby boomers, that I decided to do another post featuring the issues from October and November of 1961. Why am I collecting magazines from 1961 you may ask...well that happens to be the year in which yours truly was born. (To see my first post on the BH & G magazines just click here.)

 

Let's start with looking at a few ads. Here's one for extension phones from good o'l Ma Bell. We've come a long way baby!

Top of the line elegance for 1962!!!

 

Gosh this brings back memories! We always had a grapefruit before Thanksgiving dinner...I wonder why it was so popular back then?



 

So instant mashed potatoes have been around a lot longer than I gave them credit for!

 

 

Now let's take a look at some home decor from 51 years ago.

 

How about this little girl's room? Gotta love that little baby coach!

 

 

This kitchen is pretty snazzy...but take a close look at the shelf behind mom, see the two sock monkeys? They are a lot older than I thought!

 

 

 

Love the cabinets!

 

 

Did white brick ever really go out of style?

 

 

 Notice the magazine storage on the coffee table...I think it's a pretty neat idea!

 

 

Here's something that I've always loved but just don't see anymore...Waldorf salad!

 

 

How about these painted pumpkins? Can you believe that the description of the pumpkin on your far left read...

 

"The irate Indian has a paper feather and a steel wool scalp. Peanut eyes give him a cross-eyed look. (An arrow through the cranium is apt to make anyone cross-eyed)"

 

 

My My how the times have changed!

 

Hope you enjoyed the little trip back to the way the world was 51 years ago! I wonder what people will think 50 years from now of our world in 2012!
