This cathedral basilica of St Louis King of France is the oldest continually operating cathedral in the United States.
It is located in the French Quarter of New Orleans.
The four evangelist and ten apostles are depicted (minus Peter and Judas) in the large painting of the ceiling
The cathedral served as a place of worship for both the Roman catholic Confederate and Union solders during their respective occupations.
The permanent church was established in 1727 but was destroyed by fire in 1788. The Spanish church was rebuilt in 1794. The present day church was enlarged and built over the Spanish church in 1851.

Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral in September of 1987 during his pastoral visit from Rome to the United States .
Many of the more than 1000 priests, sisters and brothers who packed the cathedral were personally greeted by the Holy Father.
The cathedral basilica is one of New Orleans most notable landmarks.
