Design ~ Yellow in the 21st Century

"Yellow is the brightest color of the visible spectrum, and it is the most noticeable of all colors by the human eye. It means happiness and optimism; it is the color of sun shining, or bright light and creativity. ... It is the color of high energy, enthusiasm, hope, fun, and cheerfulness."
https://www.colorpsychology.org/yellow/

Back in the late sixties and throughout the seventies, yellow seemed to be everywhere in home decor. From living rooms to kitchens to outdoor spaces, sunny yellow was seen in many room designs as both bright accents as well as a totally engulfing color scheme.

It was apparent almost everywhere you looked.
Not only in decorating magazines...

...but also in the the television shows we watched...

...as well as in the pop culture of the time.

Yellow is also Doris Day's favorite color!

Yellow was everywhere! However, and for me very sadly, in the decades to come yellow in home decor begun to be considered rather passe. Almost an "Ugh what were they thinking?" kind of distaste was adopted. The popular bright and happy color gave way to muted pastels of the eighties and nineties, and then to the jewel tones of the early part of this century. As far as I can tell, yellow never really made much of a resurgence in home decor for well over 30 years.

(Oops...sorry but it is hard for me to think 1980's without thinking Don Johnson and Miami Vice.)
So imagine my surprise when earlier this month my Country Living magazine came and this was the cover!

Woo hoo!! I was so delighted to see a return of one of my favorite colors!

Aside from the warming effects yellow has on the psyche, I think one main reason why yellow is back may be because gray is the new hot neutral in today's decor. And what perfect color to pair with it...YELLOW of course!

So this spring as in last, sunny yellow will be my color choice to sprinkle throughout our home to help celebrate and welcome the season of rebirth! I love how yellow can brighten up a space and make a room almost feel like it is smiling.

  5. Barbara, yellow is such a pretty color, so bright and cheery. Until recently, I had my kitchen and dining decked out in yellow, now they are both changed, bad girl!! I am happy with what I have done but yellow will be making a comeback (to the point of almost orange in some instances) more and more in the accessories in my rooms. Wow, I did love everything about Mary Tyler Moore's apartment!!..Your touches of yellow are just perfect..Happy Tuesday..xxoJudy

  6. I am a yellow/gold girl. I have had it in my house since 1985 when we built a Georgian style house on our farm. Now, in our downsize, I had the public rooms painted a Westminster Gold by Ben Moore. I love it after all of these years. I enjoyed seeing your pics from back in time. I remember a few of them. :-) Sheila
