Amazed at what a Little Paint and Fabric can DO! (Updating Kitchen Seating)

Hi and how are you all doing?
I sure hope you enjoyed the long weekend and big kickoff to the 2015 summer season! We were down at the Jersey shore for a few days, and although the weather was a bit windy and cool it didn't stop my kiddos from venturing into the 50+ degree water!

Yikes!!!

We stayed at my dear friend Donna's house in Brigantine NJ. If you remember last summer we spent every available minute we had there working on bringing her 1970's beach home kitchen into the new millennium. I just wanted to share with you what she did with the thrift store seating she bought last year.

This is what it looked like at the end of summer 2014.

Donna actually built her own farm table for roughly $130 and then purchased the cute wicker back chairs for $50. Not bad right? The faux leather topped stools were another steal for just $10 each.

Now we knew we wanted to paint the chairs white but Donna wasn't sure what other accent color to bring into the room. She already added pretty turquoise plates to the shelf and bottles to the table, but she really wanted another pop of a different color. So last summer when our family took a week's vacation at the sweet beach bungalow, I snapped this picture of my sister Kim.

Bingo!!!
The perfect color to add to those plain looking chairs!

So when I suggested orange and white fabric for the seat covers Donna's first response was "Are you kidding me?" I think that orange was the last color she ever thought would come out of my mouth, and here is why.

This was Donna's kitchen when she and her hubby took possession of the house last May. Straight out of That 70's Show!

I told her we can bring orange into the room but in an updated and fresh way. So she picked up some new fabric and I gotta say that I think Donna hit a home run!

This kitchen is so bright and cheerful now that it actually feels like the room is smiling at you when you walk in.

How about you...is there a color trend from a past decade that you avoid like the plague? Possibly you stay away from florals with stripes and the peach overload of the 1980's? Or you do your best to avoid the 90's minimalist style and almost complete lack of color? Then there was the Moroccan vibe with its jewel toned colors of the last decade. Hmmm...I wonder where we are headed color wise in the next 5 years and what trends will be making a comeback!

I suppose only time will tell.

Have a great day!!!

  2. Barbara, what a great contrast for a beach house. A pop of orange is always a welcome color, I think. I had turquoise, blue, green and orange in my first home. Of course that was back in the 60's, but it is timeless..Happy Tuesday..Judy

  4. I really like it! The orange color looks great mixed with white. The pops of blue coordinate perfectly from the family room too. I think the key is off setting it with lots of white. Great job!

  5. Gorgeous! Orange is my favorite color at this time (I love them all), so I've been adding it throughout our home. It looks gorgeous with white, and brings neutrals to life.
    Beautiful.

  6. Home run indeed! Love the fabric and the chairs painted white are gorgeous! When we moved into our 2nd home in 88 everything was rose and blue. Thinking I'm going to avoid rose for a little longer. lol! Pink is o.k., but rose (for now) stay away! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
