Spring Time Favorite Thing ~ A Roadside Find

Spring has finally sprung here in the northeast and with this most glorious season comes one of my very favorite things to do...get outside and start working on a furniture project or two. After being all cooped up in the colder months it just does my heart good to soak in the sun and strip down or repaint a piece of furniture. Today while running a few errands, I came across this sweet piece just sitting by the side of the road.

As you can see it is a corner piece and apparently someone at some point tried give this little gem a distressed look. Most likely she was put out on the curb because, well let's face it and call a spade a spade, the paint job just ain't that good!

But she has wonderful curves, is solid wood, and the drawers are in perfect working order. So for me that makes her a keeper!

Now I just have to decide what direction to go in with this old French Provincial cutie.

What look would you giver her? And what would you use her for...a corner end table, TV stand or possibly a corner night table? Would love to know your thoughts.
Well whatever she is, I think she is simply darling!

Wishing you all a fabulous Easter week!

The Perfect Space ~ Grace's Teen Bedroom Reveal

Right before Christmas we began work on bringing Grace's "little girl" room up to date and giving it a look more appropriate for a teen aged young lady.

Grace selected the comforter set which is one of those "Bed in a Bag" deals we found at Macy's. From there Grace chose a paint color called Crystal Blue from Benjamin Moore and her once distressed shabby chic furniture was painted a crisp white.

A fun faux fur ottoman from Home Goods provides a good place for Grace to strum on her guitar or simply put on a pair of shoes.

On the wall above her guitar are two framed faux magazine covers I created using my favorite editing site PicMonkey!

Just above the mirror hangs a picture from an old calendar with a saying I think perfectly describes adolescence.

We decided to forego curtains and instead installed these pretty white faux wood shutters from Home Depot. They let in the perfect amount of light for any time of the day while also providing the privacy a growing girl needs.

A cute picture holder I found in a thrift shop in Bucks County Pennsylvania called Good Stuff Thriftis hung next to her window along with a much needed hook rack just below for Grace's book bag, handbags, et cetera.

The previously painted hot pink yard sale vanity now has a cool blue color to coordinate with her room. It's paired with a darling faux fur desk chair, another great buy from Home Goods.

Finally the polka dots on the fun new lamp shade from Home Goods is mimicked on the wall opposite Grace's bed. The wall dots are actually decals I purchased online from a company call WNL (Walls Need Love). Grace plans to eventually hang some of her artwork on the big empty wall.

I can't tell you how excited Gracie is about her new room. She is so thrilled in fact that I have yet to have to ask her if her room is clean and if the bed is made, and that is an amazing thing for my daughter!

Have a great day and don't forget to stop back tomorrow evening for our 104th Share Your Style Link Party!

From Vanity to Desk...A Teen's Work Space

Just about six years ago my sister Kim picked up this cute little vanity at a yard sale for only $5. I wasn't sure if it was going to fit in Grace's room but for a measly five bucks I thought what the heck...so she bought it.

I cleaned it up, sanded it down and repainted the vanity in a Watermelon color for Grace's "little girl" room.

Not wanting to part with the piece, I needed to give it a new look, and purpose, to go with the freshly painted bedroom of my now 14 year old daughter. First the vanity received a coat of Lagoon blue from Rustoleum and then it was paired with an old shelf which has been in my family for as long as I can remember. The shelf was painted white and sits perfectly above the computer monitor.

I was lucky enough to find this fuzzy office style chair at Home Goods to replace the vanity chair Kim had bought to go with the piece. It was just a little too small for my 5'9" and still growing daughter.

An inexpensive gooseneck lamp for task lighting was purchased at Walmart. The daisy mirrors were another Home Goods find.

The original drawer pulls are painted in a nickel and the top of the piece in a crisp white.

The perfect place for Grace to organize, study and hopefully get some straight "B's"!!!

Stay tuned for the full bedroom reveal coming soon!
In the meantime wishing you all a terrific week!

Christmas Hutch in the Kitchen

I know you haven't heard much from me over the last 2 weeks but this is because of a very good reason. Mr. Rosemary Lane and myself have been working really diligently on a few long overdue changes to our kitchen before the holidays get here. Last week we finished up some painting and the addition of some bead board. (And I have to tell you how excited I am about how it all came out!)

Anyhow how last spring I purchased a hutch for our kitchen at ReStore for just $40. Here is what she looked like when I first brought it home in April. (The two front glass doors were removed in order to safely transport her home in my minivan. I decided I liked it open therefore I opted to leave them off.)

She is definitely dated but I love the details of the wood, the wire meshing and her overall look. Plus her size was just perfect for breaking up our rather long kitchen wall.

So after painting the kitchen I finally made the decision on what color to paint my ReStore beauty!

BLACK!

Then I went ahead and dolled her all up for Christmas!

filled her shelves up using pretty white Ironstone and loads of green and red accents. To add some beautiful and natural holiday touches I cut sprigs of arbor vitae from my next door neighbor's ginormous trees (she did give me permission), and paired it with the gorgeous holly sent from my dear friend Judy over at Gold Country Cottage.

This little guy was in my home when I was a little girl. He must be about 40 years old!

And this is my favorite Clothtique Santa! perfect for the kitchen right???

More sprigs and other natural elements were placed on her top along with a few twinkle lights, holly trees, pretty red poinsettias and a little stone house I picked up at TJMaxx a couple years ago.

I think she looks incredibly sophisticated in her new sleek black finish. And she is soooo pretty standing very regal in our kitchen all decked out for Christmas.

I am almost ready to reveal the finished kitchen. Unfortunately while shooting my pics today I managed to have a little accident with my Cannon Rebel and now she is not working. Praying for a Christmas miracle and that I don't have to send it out in to be repaired. I'd hate to not have my camera for the holidays. Keeping my fingers crossed Mr. RL can work a little magic and fix her for me.

In the meantime enjoy the beauty of this special time of year as you prepare for the blessed celebration of Jesus's birth.

Wishing you all Peace Comfort and Joy!

Summer Home Tours Series

I have to tell you that I was thrilled beyond belief when my friend Marty from the beautiful blog A Stroll Thru Life, asked if 21 Rosemary Lane would like to be part of the Summer Home Tour Series she was putting together. To be honest I haven't done a home tour in couple of years so I was kind of excited to put together this post for you all to enjoy!

First let me tell you a little bit about our home. It is considered to be a Cape Cod style home with a rectangular floor plan and a steep Gable roof line. There is a large kitchen area, a living room, dining room, laundry room and a bath and a half on the first floor. On the same floor we also have a large master bedroom which we currently use as a guest bedroom, and a bonus room we converted into our office. Upstairs there are three bedrooms, one full bath and a walk-in attic. Below the main floor is a basement which runs almost the full length of the first floor.

The house was built in 1974 and sits on one acre of flat land we like to call "The Curran Acre".

So welcome to our home, please come on in.
(There is Moe taking a snooze on the front porch. My my he looks sleepy!)

I shared a post last week on the front porch so if you would like to see more pics just click here.

Over the winter I repainted the foyer and reconfigured the furniture arrangement. The large pitcher on the buffet is a Home Goods score from last year. I like to change the flowers in it for each season. This is my spring and summer display. To add some architectural interest, a shelf was placed just above the arch shaped mirror.

To the right of the foyer is our living room. This is where you can really feel summer influencing the decor. Last summer I spent a lot of time at the beach, so when I was deciding on what to do for my living room makeover I had plenty of sea and sky inspiration.

I simply adore the relaxed feel of this room which happens to be the perfect vibe for how we use the space. Our living room is where we read, watch TV, do puzzles, play games, entertain company, and where you can find us almost any Friday evening of the year enjoying pizza and a movie.

The gallery wall of kid photos above the piano also gets changed out with the seasons. As you can see for the summer months I filled many of the frames with pictures of Grace and Michael at the beach.

The large seascape painting over the mantel was my inspiration piece for the room. I pulled colors from the painting and used them as the room's wall color, in choosing slip covers, and for the accent color of the bookcase stenciling. This painting actually hung in Mr. Rosemary Lane's childhood home. His mother purchased the it years ago because it reminded her of where she grew up...the Jersey shore.

Starfish added to the coffee table vignette.

Through the foyer pass the living room is our formal dining area. It is a good size room and seats about 10 comfortably for dinner.

A sunny yellow runner and brightly colored flowers makes the room feel lighter and brighter for the summer months.

In the guest bedroom I pulled up the heavy dark wool carpet and replaced it with a smaller lighter area carpet which had been living in the upstairs hallway. This immediately gave the room a much more airy feel.

Two wreaths were place above each bed's headboard and some pretty handmade quilts are adorning the trunk at the foot of the first bed.

The old weathered trunk at the foot of the second bed holds a bamboo tray containing painted bottles and a pretty magazine basket.

One of the wicker chairs from the back patio was brought in and placed in the corner of the room. A coordinating pillow and cushion, plus a picher of flowers brings a fresh summer look to this space.

Upstairs we have 3 bedrooms. The first on the right is the one we use as the master. To me it is the happiest room in the house because of the color scheme. The calm green and pretty orange always makes this room feel like a lovely summer garden even in the dead of winter.

The kids rooms are across the hall. Now I do have to apologize for these pictures since they are actually a couple years old. It seems as we get into these tween and teen years it has become an ongoing battle to get our two little lambs to keep their rooms neat and clean. Grace's room is first up. When she was 5 I painted the two toned purple strips on the wall and made the ceiling pink. Now she is coming up on 13 and her room is probably due for another makeover.

The vintage vanity was actually a $5 yard sale find. I sanded it down and painted it in a hot pink color called watermelon.

Michael's room is on the same side of the hallway as Grace's room, but since it is more towards the front of the house the ceiling has a rather large slope due to the steep Gable roof. This is pretty typical of cape cod style homes. The furniture in this room was a bedroom set from Sears which belonged me and my sister Kim when we were little girls. It was spray painted red and a cute white star was added to the middle panel of the three paneled drawers.

At the time I changed this room from the nursery to a little boy's room Michael was also 5. He loved anything to do with travel so I gave him a red white and blue color scheme with a touch of Americana.

I picked up two old 2-tiered end tables at a yard sale for only $10, and then gave them a whole new look to go with the decor of Michael's room.

The headboard I snagged at ReStore for $8. It was painted red and Michael's name was added to it.

But alas our children do grow up and outgrow some of the things they loved so much when they were little. I think Michael is ready for a big boy living space. Maybe next year!

Off of the kitchen we have an 18' X 18' screened in back patio. Currently we have the screens all pulled off and are in the process of replacing them. We are also painting the ceiling, wood beams and the cement floor. To date this space has been totally furnished with hand-me-down items, yard sale finds and freebies on the side of the road.
Here is how it has looked over the past 2 years.

I think my most notable freebie find happened when Kim and I were driving down a road near her home in Pennsylvania, and we saw this white wicker settee just hanging out at the end of someone's driveway. Two people were sitting on their front porch so Kim asked if the wicker piece was for the taking. They nodded yes and we immediately scooped it up and put in the back of my van. Score!

And that wraps up my summer home tour. I hope you enjoyed it. I look forward to sharing with you the rest of our home as I complete the decorating projects going on right now. If you like to see more you can follow me on Facebook and Twitter where I will show you lots of sneak peaks.

And since you were kind enough to stop by today for the tour, here is a sneak peak of my office makeover.
