Updating a Favorite Old Buffet

This buffet or side board was originally in my parents home. We lovingly referred to it as the "telephone company piece" because  back in 1968 the phone company accidentally put a hole in the kitchen wall while installing our new phone, and then compensated my parents by giving them a check in the amount of $200 to fix it. My dad patched up the hole and my mom bought this piece of furniture.

The original finish on this was a dark maple and it had very dated handles and draw pulls. So in order to update the look, I sanded it down lightly and spray painted the base in and antique white. The flat top surface was left alone except for removing the glossy finish. Then after it was dry, I sanded again just in the areas where the piece would naturally wear to give it a distressed feel. I replaced the knobs and draw pulls before rehanging the doors and putting the two draws back. The whole project took one day and about $42 to complete.

This buffet is solid wood and has become more or less an heirloom in my home, not to mention the great storage it provides. Gotta love the old furniture...it was really made to last!!!

  1. Yesterday I drove by a thrift store with a bunch of junky old furniture for sale out front and I actually thought of stopping, buying something, and refinishing it somehow. Believe me when I say that I never had this thought before reading your blog. Somehow you make it look so easy!

  2. I think of each piece as an adventure and very often I'm never quite sure what I will end up with. You learn something new with each project so I say give it a whirl...nothing to loose and everything to gain!!!

  3. Girl, I just redid my buffet in my dining room and it looks so much like this!! It WAS pine and I painted it a creamy white, distressed, glazed and did the top just as you did yours! Love this!

    Great minds think alike right?
