Antique Market English Ironstone Pitcher and Basin

This past weekend was a mighty busy one for me as I attended my 35th class reunion on Saturday night, and then spent the entire day Sunday with my college roommate antiquing out in Lancaster County Pennsylvania. I only picked up one item there and it was this beautiful ironstone pitcher and basin.

It was on an "AS IS" table for only $10 most likely because it has a few cracks in both the bowl and the pitcher. But I loved the pretty detail of the handle and the embossed design around the middle of 

the pitcher.

However before I even got out to Lancaster I was at my sister Kim's house where she gifted me 4 pretty blue and white dishes she had picked up at an auction for only a dollar. They were all crafted in England!

I am very excited about my new pitcher/basin combo, it is so perfect for our home. And what a glorious autumn day I spent milling around the different tables of the antique market, as they were filled with wonderful old pieces of just about everything. Thank you too to my sister Kim for the beautiful dishes...I simply love them!

Mama Went a Thrift'n

This past Saturday, while I was in this little consignment shop, the Gristmill Emporium, I found these two sweet wooden swans. Well for some reason I only bought one, the smaller one, and I spent the rest of the weekend kicking myself for not buying both. I'm sure you know that feeling. 

So I kept my fingers, toes, eyes and anything else I have two of crossed, that come today when the store reopened, I could run back and buy my little swan's big brother.

The store opened its doors at 11 am, and I was in the parking lot by 11:10. I got out of my car and as I walked toward the building this beautiful blue colored vase, which was sitting on an outside display, immediately caught my eye.

I quickly picked it up to investigate, but when I looked inside I realized that my beautiful vase was not a vase at all. It had a soap dish in it. My lovely blue vase is actually a bathroom trash can! But you know what, I didn't care. A vision is a vision, and all I knew was that I could definitely see it filled with a huge bouquet of spring flowers sitting on my Easter table! 

 With the "vase" under my arm I made my way inside the shop, and there he was, the second swan, right on the floor where he had been on Saturday. I grabbed him and paid the sweet little lady at the register for both my new "vase" and wood swan.

Now not only have the two swans been reunited but I am also the proud owner of a beautiful new "vase", and this makes mama one very happy lady!!!

Today's Surprise Thrifty Finds

 

Today I was running a few quick errands and while I was in the neighborhood of this little thrift shop which is part of our local food pantry, I decided to pop in to see if anything there caught my eye!

The first thing I found was this darling metal watering can. As you might be able to tell it needs a little TLC, but the rope like trim is what drew me to it. I will probably paint and then distress this sweet little can. The price...two dollars!

Next I came across this picture in one of the shop's picture bins. It was kind of hiding down in the bottom of the bin, so I really had to dig to get it out!

I flipped over the painting while in the store and this is what is on the back.

 So of course I had to google the artist when I got home. Issac Israels was a Dutch painter who lived at the turn of the last century. He was one of the leading painters of the Amsterdam Impressionists.  The name of the piece is "Donkey Riding on the Shore" and is believed to have been painted sometime between 1898 to 1900.

Although this is probably a low cost reproduction of the artist's painting, I am still thrilled to have only spent $5.00 on it. I have been looking for smaller pieces of framed art to use as accents on end tables, book shelves and dressers. This thrifty piece of artwork fit the bill perfectly!

Amazing Thrifty Finds at The Red Barn

Over the weekend I was at one of my college friend's home for a girls get together. It was fun catching up as the 5 of us went out to dinner and stayed up late drinking wine and chatting until we fell asleep. On Sunday 3 of us went to this wonderful antique shop just outside the Reading PA area called The Red Barn in Blandon. I have to tell you that this place was spectacular and you could easily find yourself spending hours upon hours just milling through store checking out all of the The Red Barn's fabulous treasures.

The first item I found was this beautiful transferware pitcher and saucer. I love the red and white pattern and it just so happens that it is a perfect match to a set of four dishes I picked up from the Christmas Tree Shop at the end of last week. The pitcher set was only $10 and the plates from CTS were $3.99 each.

The second item I keyed in on was this wonderful vintage Coca-Cola wood crate, complete with handles so it can be used as a coffee tray or simply to hold books and magazines. This box was a steal at only $15.

Another Beautiful Thrifty Find!

 

Every year after Christmas, usually on the 26th, I make my way over to the nearby Lamington General Store which is this wonderful old 1890's restored general store that is filled with the most beautiful things. They tupically have all their Christmas goodies on sale for anywhere from 30 to 50 percent! This year I fell completely in love with this Victorian globe and simply had to have it.

 

 

It was originally was priced at $35.99, but was 40% off so I ended up paying just a little over $23 with tax! I just love all the detail and the gorgeous patina.

 

 

Inside the globe there is a glass cylinder where you place your candle.

I was so thrilled with this globe and it's price that I just had to buy 2. (There were 3 total in the store so my sister Kim bought the last one!!!)

 

 

I have no particular place in mind of where to put them, but you can be sure that they will show up in at least one or two of my posts this year!!!

Thrifty Artwork ~ Picture by Joseph Bodner

 

Another trip to Pennsylvania equals another trip to one of my favorite places...ReStore! This past Saturday I picked up this picture reproduction of American oil painter Joseph Bodner for $15 at the ReStore in Bucks County Pennsylvania. Bodner lived from 1925 to 1982 and was actually a native of the Garden State, New Jersey. The title of this piece is Riding Shotgun.

 

I wasn't sure where I was going to put this painting, first thought in my head was over the mantle, but that is already decorated for the Fall. Then I tried it over the sofa...but naaah, not working for me. Then I thought I'd try it above the piano...mmmm...I think it is just right!

 

 

The wood frame actually matched the wood of the piano really well...the colors are also perfect for the Fall. I just placed a few natural and rustic items on the piano to compliment the colors in the picture.

 

 

I even added a copy of the book "American Statesmen" by author Patrick Henry, published in 1887, to complete the entire vignette.

 

 

Can't wait for Mr. RL to get home and see where I placed the picture...not bad I'd say for only 15 dollars!
