Cast Iron Casserole Dish and a Hoecake Pan?

Yesterday I was down visiting my sister Kim and helping her arrange things in her brand new remodeled kitchen! (More on that to come later.) Anyhow, of course when we have out little visits together we inevitably end up going on a quick trip to ReStore!
So what did I find????

I love both the functionality and the look of cast iron and that is what initially drew to this cookware. They were taped together and being sold as a set...this particular little duo I picked up for a few cents over $13 including tax. So as I usually do with items I don't regularly shop for, I had to google Miss Deen's cookware to find out what they normally sell for, this way I know how much of a bargain I truly got!

The 3.5 quart cast iron casserole is currently selling on Amazon for $39.95 and on eBay for $49.99. The 11" Hoecake pan is being sold at Bed Bath & Beyond for $32.99! So I did get a great deal on these.

Now since I purchased the cookware at ReStore I would naturally want to clean them up a bit, and as you may already know you aren't suppose to use soap and water on cast iron. But they have been used before so I did gently wash them down with a little dish detergent and water, however now they will need to be re-seasoned. To do this just I'll wipe the inside of each pan with cooking oil and place them in the oven set at 350 degrees for one hour. Baking the pans with the oil will seal in the flavor which comes from the cast iron.

Next you may be wondering what a Hoecake pan is or better yet a Hoecake itself...and to be honest I had to google that as well. This is a cornmeal and flour bread or cake and the name apparently came from the fact that at one point these cakes were actually baked on the blade of a hoe over an open fire.

And what am I going to be making in my Hoecake pan you may be asking??

My answer is...

Stayed tuned to find out!!!

Have a good one!

    1. To be honest Kathy, that cast iron pot was a God send during Sandy...I put it right on the grill with no worries. I was able to make so many dishes like chili and stew that we would not have been able to enjoy without that pot!

    2. I think the statement "cooked on a hoe" is a myth. in the early years in the South, a pan very much like the one you purchased was referred to as a hoe, and since it was this pan that was used to male the cakes, they were referred to as hoe cakes.
