Guest Bedroom Yard Sale Dresser Makeover

About 3 years ago my sister Kim and I were out on a beautiful Saturday morning in spring hitting the garage sales down in her neck of the woods, Bucks County Pennsylvania, and we came across this dresser with mirror. The asking price was $75, but in pure Kim style she bartered it down to the nice round figure of $60.

Now I knew that someday this piece would end up in the main bedroom of the house which is on the first floor. This is because at the time, and actually up to about a month ago, the room was the playroom/toy room for the kids.

Although Mr. Rosemary Lane liked it the way it was, I thought the dresser was a bit blah and dated looking. My original thought was to paint the piece in a two tone medium sand and off white, but as I began working on the room I realized that the color combination may be too light for the direction of the look I was headed in.

I was going to need some DRAMA!

So I pulled off all the hardware and sanded down the drawers and the doors and using Krylon's black paint and primer, I sprayed on the new color.  After the paint was dry, I went over the drawers and doors with a light coat of the Minwax which I had bought to use on the top of the piece. This made the wood grain appear much more prominent.

Then the front of the dresser was sanded down while the piece was lying on it's back. Once the sanding was done again I sprayed on Krylon's black primer and paint in a satin finish.

Next I stripped the finish off of the top with a sander and some 60 and 100 grit sand paper, and then applied 2 coats of Minwax in a satin finish of Bombay Mahogany.

The drawer pulls and handles received a coat of Krylon's gold spray paint. This made them really pop adding a beautiful accent to the entire piece.

I also made some pretty scented drawer liner using essential oil of lavender and coordinating wrapping paper.
(To read how this was done just click here.)

And now the dresser and mirror make a beautiful statement in my freshly painted newly decorated guest bedroom.

There are a few more touches I want to add to the room including replacing the old white ceiling fan the kids broke with a nice wood grain fan. I also would like to add a few more accessories and I may do something a little avant garde with the room's  rather large closet.

Well it looks like father's day in the northeast is going to be a beautiful one weather-wise. Hoping you all have a great weekend and happy Father's day to all of your wonderful Dads and Misters!

XO

  4. It turned out so pretty and looks very expensive. You have to have patience and endurance to do a project like that. I lose all of it in about 30 seconds so I really admire your work. :)
