My Easy Peasy Strawberry Trifle

The other evening I hosted an impromptu dinner party for a few close friends. I was in the grocery store running a little short on time and all I had left to to get was something for dessert. I really wanted to resist the impulse to buy a store bought confection, and since the spring strawberries looked amazing, I went to one of my go-to dessert recipes...an easy peasy strawberry trifle. I purchased the strawberries, an angel food cake, instant pudding, sour cream and Cool Whip topping. Once I was home and in about 15 minutes time, I had one deliciously impressive dessert!

What you will need...

1 angel food cake cut into bite size pieces
1 lb strawberries hulled and sliced
1 3.4 oz pkg. of instant vanilla pudding
1 c. milk
8 oz sour cream
1 regular size container of Cool Whip topping
The zest from 1 orange

What you will need to do...

You can prepare this recipe in individual serving bowls as pictured above, or this recipe can be prepared using a trifle bowl or any other good sized glass bowl.

Add the cup of milk to the pudding, blend and let sit for one minute until it thickens. Then add the sour cream and orange zest and mix well. Blend in all but 2 full tablespoons of the Cool Whip...this you will reserve to use for the topping.

If using a trifle bowl, place half of the cut up cake in the bottom of the bowl. If using the individual dessert bowls, divide the cake by the number of bowls being prepared and then follow the same layering instructions. (You also may need to make the pieces smaller depending on the size of your dessert bowls.)

Next layer one half of the pudding mixture over the cake pieces and top with half of the strawberries and then repeat. Once the rest of your strawberries have been added, top with your dollop of reserved whipped cream and garnish with one whole strawberry.

Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.

Variations

To create a festive look for either Memorial Day or Fourth of July gatherings, you can add blueberries for a patriotic look!

Also you can easily lower the fat and calories by using skim milk with both low fat sour cream and whipped topping!

Enjoy!!!
