Homemade Sugar Scrub

I love a good exfoliation and the warm tingly feeling and scent left behind by peppermint! Well I wanted to try my hand at making my own sugar scrub so last Friday I stopped by our local health food store to pick up a bottle of peppermint essential oil.

Then I went through a number of different home recipes on the Internet looking to take the best of each one I found.
I decided to go with mineral oil over any of the regular olive or safflower oils since mineral oil is odorless and colorless. I wanted odorless because I didn't want any other aromas interfering with my peppermint scent. The fact that it is colorless means that I don't have to worry about the color of my scrub being compromised. Most recipes use a one to one ratio of oil to sugar, however my first go around at making the scrub this way I found the regular granulated sugar to be a bit too abrasive for me. So what I decided to do was to split the sugar amount by using half granulated sugar and half superfine sugar.

This is what I used to make my sugar scrub.

First measure your container to see how much sugar in can hold. My container was able to hold 3 cups of the sugars I used.

1 1/2 cups regular granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups of superfine sugar
2 1/2 cups mineral oil (I reduced the ratio because of the smaller granules in the superfine sugar)
15-20 ( or more) drops of peppermint essential oil
1 good size drop of red food coloring

1. First pour both sugars into a large bowl.

2. Blend the sugars together very well. You might even want to blend them using your hands.

3. Add the mineral oil to the sugars and continue to blend while adding the oil. You can go ahead and add the sugar mixture to your container.

4. The mixture will shrink a little as you add the mineral oil, so you may want to add a wee bit more sugar and mineral oil to your mixture to ensure that you fill the entire jar to just within about 1/2 inch from the rim.

Next just add your peppermint oil and then the food coloring and simply blend.

Gracie and I just love this scrub. It is sooo yummy! Just be careful when using this scrub in the shower as the oil may create a slippery surface on the tub or shower floor.

I think this would make a great teacher's gift at Christmas or even as a hostess gift. I want to make little labels to put on the front of the jar...how pretty would that be in maybe a gift basket with some organic soaps.

Until later...have a great day!!
